I love making these vessels. I originally had the idea to create a three dimensional painting to showcase the beauty of our wild places in a unique way that might stay in peoples minds. I enjoy how the positive and negative space plays with your visual depth perception. The outside of the vessel is carved in bas-relief and then hand painted in as much detail as I can put into the small scale of the subjects. The illusion of reality can be quite convincing. This is a Tsavo Sunset themed vessel, just so evocative of the African sunset in the bush where I grew up in Kenya. Here you can see the two images of the carving process and the final painting. The vessel here is almost finished. I look forward to posting the final images soon.
