Gordon Pembridge Wildlife Artist

Studio Update

Painting the rich patterns of iron oxides using artists iron oxide pigments in the paint itself. Such an interesting experience getting to grips with the beautiful erosion textures on the cliff face behind the kingfisher. I enjoy the fascinating journey of study to do with artists pigments and how they relate to environmental colours that we see through our own eyes. This painting is about facing the tangle of challenges in the world when we leave the nest. Visually an exploration of the beauty of natural weathered shapes and colours along with the three dimensional tangle of Pohutukawa tree roots. The jewel in the crown being the little young kingfisher so beautiful in colouring against the tangled and textured backdrop. Indeed a fascinating challenge to render for me. I hope you enjoy.

  1. So interesting with your explanation of the paints you are using & the thought behind the picture. It’s poetic. Everyone who follows your work should read this. I did enjoy.

  2. This amazing work Gordon really tugs at my heart strings….. the detail in those perfect cliffs, aged roots of the pohutukawa providing our beautiful kingfisher with a perfect fishing vantage point is outstanding……
My childhood memories of sixty years ago of picnics along the maraetai coast beach road where really old pohutukawa tree roots were our adventure playground and the kingies waited….
