Studio Update

Wow ! Friday already, here is another studio news update. I really hope you are enjoying the progress in this painting. Now I’m well into the “modelling” stage of the painting. The blocking in stage for me is relatively flat colour, the modelling has as it sounds more attention to shape, highlight and shadow with suggested detail and then the detail stage follows. I have a systematic approach to my oil painting practice. This includes constructing the panel with mounted Belgian linen with nothing but the best techniques and materials to increase the longevity of my work. I only use well known and historically proven materials in conjunction with conservation science knowledge and best practice.

When a painting gets to this stage in my experience the reference material starts to let go, the constraints vanish, the painting draws you into its very own narrative where you learn to mould the direction from your very own direct experiences. In this case walking the beautiful beach near where I live. This young little Kingfisher fresh from the nest sitting in the dappled light under the sparse leaves on a late summer morning. The warm environment a small comfort for the navigation of a tangled new world of choices.
